Alternate Picking

www.homestudioland.com Please visit the site to get the accompanying pdf lesson (for free). The pdf contains the tablature which has both picking AND fingering. Sometimes, those ‘boring’ exercises can turn into a great thing. I’m going to show you how throughout this series! It all started when way back, I wanted to make my own exercises. After making a few wild exercises, I thought to myself, “will these really ever pay off? I mean, thye make no sense” (musically). Little did I know that there was a great benefit to it, and that benefit has been preparing myself to play ANYTHING that I want, when I want. When playing guitar, you want to practice things you CAN’T play or don’t know to progress – prepare yourself. Once you’ve practiced things that you think may not pay off at all, in the future, you’ll realize it will. You want to make sure that in the end, you’re not limited in any way whatsoever. The idea here is to not limit yourself. When the time comes for you to pull off something you don’t have much experence with, the chances are that you’ll fly right through it like a breeze because of the exercises like I show you in this lesson. The other very important aspect of this is getting your mind running at 100MPH. This is GREAT for building different licks, and finding out new patterns. We’ve got scales, arpeggios, chord progressions, sequences, etc that are already prefabricated, so why not apply your own pattern to it and make it original? This lesson shows you how.

I make it an effort to explain things thoroughly so anyone can understand. Some things are a little difficult to pull off. For example, the picking on these exercises. I give a bit more info on how to overcome those tiny, but amazingly agitating hurdles that we all encounter.

The rest of the series won’t be prefaced with as much talking. I just wanted the first to be prefaced to give a better idea of everything.

    Thanks for the comment.

Lessons on diatonic theory which include scales and arpeggios are on the way, so please stay tuned. Alternate picking and legato for scales, as well as sweep picking for arpeggios among other things will be done as well!

Listen to the same song 100 times in a row and then play the same thing on guitar and you’ll see how :D

Does having perfect pitch help? I’ve always had it, but I haven’t read music in a long time, and am just starting on guitar.

Perfect pitch is what I’m talking about. With it you’ll be able to transcribe a song easily by ear and you’ll know immediately if something is off.

Concerning Pitch accuracy. I’m Dyslexic. I’ve researched the subject for years. One study found that many dyslexic brains have smaller cells in the area that transmits sound (from the ears to the area that processes the sound). The theory is that although a dyslexic can hear all the usual frequencies, some sounds reach the brain a little later than others. A good example for myself is the ability to differentiate between sounds like “buh” and “duh”. Bare with me I’ve run out of character space

Hi again. Ok, so… when I practice guitar, I tend to rely on my digital tuner for accuracy. I then play what the tab tells me. I hope that as I play, my ability to recognised the intricate tonal stuff will improve.
I think these videos will help me a great deal.

Is the main difference between the sweep spider and alternate spider exercise just the picking pattern? Alternate would just be up down up down and sweep just has the down down down thing going on. Is that right?
