Gianmarc’s Lesson on Yngwie’s Diminished Sweep Arpeggios

In this lesson, I teach you how to play Yngwie Malmsteen’s signature diminished sweep arpeggios. I learned them from watching Yngwie’s instructional video. I’ve heard a lot of people criticize that video because he goes too fast and isn’t the best teacher in the world. I would agree that he goes pretty quickly over stuff, but if you’re already a pretty good guitarist with a good ear, you can actually learn a heck of lot from that video. It’s definitely not a good video for beginners or even most intermediate players though. If you’re pretty new to sweep picking, make sure you learn this first: www.youtube.com Also, please remember to check out my album here: www.cdbaby.com Or search Gianmarc ‘Too Proud to Beg’ on iTunes or Amazon mp3.

Nice video. Diminished sweep patterns are what I used to advance my sweep picking skills when I was first starting.

Thanks a lot! Yeah, the diminshed ones are good sweep picking practice. I think it’s because they’re so fun to play.

@richardrdenisii: It’s a common beginner mistake to think that you should use your pinky everytime you need to play a note that’s three frets up from the previous note, but with experience you’ll find that sometimes it makes more sense to make the stretch with your ring finger. Watch great players like Yngwie and Guthrie Govan and you’ll see that they’ll often opt for the stretch with the ring finger over using the pinky. All that matters is that the notes are getting fretted cleanly.

@GJaunz It’s a common beginner mistake to not use your pinky. yngwie uses his pinky every time for 3 string dim arpegios

@squirrel162: Awesome, glad you were able to pick it up so quickly! It is a great lick to practice if you’re relatively new to sweep picking.

@squirrel162: Hmm, I don’t have any 4 or 5 string sweeps on my channel, but I do have a few six string ones, and a two string one that’s really great practice for getting the sweeping motion down. Search for “Ron Thal’s Sweep picking lesson (demonstrated by Gianmarc)” on Youtube, that’s probably the best sweeping practice you can get!
