Its a shame you weren’t born back in the day when Satch was giving guitar lessons in Frisco.. to the likes of Kirk Hammett I take it you are a fan of him lol..or Alex Skolnick who IMO absorbed more of Satriani’s wisdom, my advice to you is practice makes perfect, don’t try to beat Satch, you’ll go nuts lol, you still have so much time ahead of you, try to develop your own style eventually ..but if you like Satch’s tone so much which is understandable, keep it and work around all you have learned so far, learn modes Lydian, Myxolydian, Dorian, Phrygian all of them, and play with them, but remember Satch loves blues so dont walk too far away from the pentatonic scale.. and learn more about his set ups and effects he has many.. and if you have a tremolo bar on your guitar play with it, experiment as much as you can, basically make your practice enjoyable and productive.. Satch has tutorials and DVDs you can try.. so you can be closer to Satch, but dont forget to be close to yourself and your own style : )

    Good Luck : )

Satriani Rocks! Nuno Bettencourt, Vito Bratta, Alex Skolnick, Reb Beach, George Lynch, and tons more! I dig metal guitarists!! No other form of music has as much emphasis on the lead guitar. No other form of music has guitarists with such talent, who can play with such insane precision. Would LOVE to go to a Joe Satriani/Eric Johnson/Steve Vai show. Had the chance but never went.

I don’t play, but want to get one and learn. It’s not too late at my age. Look at Carlos Santana. He’s amazing and he’s what, almost 60? Eric Clapton, the same thing! Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Pete Townsend, Keith Richards.. ALL AMAZING at their age! Those guys aren’t flashy metal guitarists that play firey leads, but they they’re great players, just the same.

My advice to you is to develope your own style! Don’t try to be like someone else. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, but originality is pretty great, too. Be unique, be yourself, and you’ll be playing as good as the best of them. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You’re only 16, and Santana is 60! Keep practicing and think of how great you’ll be playing by the time you are 60!

check out this guy, probably about your age. keep practicing and you can outdo him!

Why not try to develop a style of your own ? You say you’re sixteen, and have ‘mastered’ all those musical tools you mentioned — I’m 63 and learn something new on the instrument every day !! and that’s after 46 years playing for a living. I think that you should use all you’ve learned to create your own style. BUT — there’s nothing wrong with idolising one of the masters of the instrument.
