Focus on alternate picking and economy picking exercises. I would just use a few per target area of training. Chromatics are great and using scales as exercises is also a good idea. Use a metronome and buckle down for a week or two. Be consistent and practice every day for one to two hours. Start the metronome off and try to find your "comfort" speed, then experiment and determine where your "problem" speed starts. Once you identify that – Start practicing a little before this. Slowly increase the tempo but don’t jump ahead.
Also take breaks to do just down strokes and up strokes. Do variations of even picking, and triplets, and maybe even a little tremolo. Always stretch your hands before practicing, and take your time. Enjoy the slow notes and you will get there. Hope this helps.
practice slowly! it sounds really stupid but if you practice really slow then you can slowly get faster. first you take whatever your playing at a speed that you can play the entire thing through steady and it feels comfortable. it might sound a little weird because its so slow. then SLOWLY get faster (over a course of a week works depending on what it is)
Practice, Practice, Practice!!!! You should also do an internet search for tutorials on proper picking techniques. Since I don’t know your ability, it would not hurt to check and make sure you are practicing the proper way rather than reinforcing what may be a bad habit. Do you Alternate pick? This can increase your speed over just regular down strokes…
Guitar playing is a lot like performance driving. You learn to be smooth and precise, and the speed will come of itself.
There is no way to be fast now, and learn to be smooth later.
