I've Hit a Plateau in My Guitar Playing and Need Some Advice?

Alright, so I’ve been playing acoustic guitar for a year now, I can play pretty much any song that requires chords and some finger picking and arpeggios if I practice and concentrate on that stuff a lot. I can also sing while playing. I recently bought an Epi SG G400 because I’m more into alternative rock and stuff… However most of the stuff I play is basically just bar chords and really simple riffs.
Which classics can I learn to play that will help me with my technique and skill?
I want to learn music theory and scales. I’ve tried and learned my minor and major scales but I truly don’t know where to go after that… I want to be able to keep in key and play my own riffs and improvise. I know it’ll take tons of practice and time, which I can definitely commit to. I guess my problem is that I’ve hit a plateau and don’t know how to improve… Anyone know what I can do with the scales and where to go after that?
Thanks in advance.

    Hello there,

Listen to what Joe Satriani has to say about modes and scales. He may not be your style of play, but his advice is excellent.

Now to start learning the modes. I think Whole Note. Com has some great theory lessons. This one by Stone Dragon, Lesson #754, Comparing Modes may be helpful.

You may want to browse the other lessons at Whole Note. Also, search Youtube for some of Satriani’s other video lessons. He has several there.

Those may not get you over the dump, but I think they will point you in the right direction.

    Later,

Buy some guitar books…go to a place like guitar center and talk with some sales ppl. Try learning different types of styles…blues, jazz, punk, ect. Learn your way around the guitar in every way possible. Once you know the guitar without thinking, you’ll be able to do whatever you want.
