Learning PIano – Finding Middle C on the Keyboard
When you learn piano there will be a lot of talk about middle C and it’s location. What is middle C, how do you find it, and why is it so important are all questions we’re going to answer in this article.
Middle C – What Exactly is it?
Middle C is quite literally the middle C key on your piano. Middle C is the first key you’ll be shown on a piano when learning and it also marks the area of the keyboard where most popular tunes begin.
Finding Middle C isn’t difficult, but it will take a little memorization.
How to Find it on a Keyboard or Piano
The location of middle C on a piano is the 4th C from the left hand side. On a piano if you know your note locations and steps then you can count from the left: the 1st C is the 3rd key, the 2nd C is the 10th key and so on every 7 keys is a C until you hit the fourth one. So the middle C is the 24th white key from the left hand side.
On a keyboard this may vary depending on the number of keys. If your electric keyboard has 88 keys then the location is the same as a piano, the 4th C. How ever if your keyboard has 49, 61 or 76 keys it’s the 3rd C not the 4th. You can find the C the same way by counting up from the left hand side.
To memorize the position of middle C note how many black key sets precede it. You can use those black keys as a reference point to quickly find middle C.
The Relevance of Middle C
From a musical point of view middle C denotes the area of the piano where a lot of the chords, notes etc. Begin in popular music. It is also thought of as the dividing key on the piano that separates your left hand from your right hand.
