What can I do to improve my guitar playing?

I’ve been playing guitar for 4 years now, but it feels like I’m going nowhere in my practice. I play every day, for hours at a time, but It seems like I’m running around in circles. Could it have been that the only way I know how to learn guitar is through tabs? And being so, what can I do to correct that? Another thing, I heard it was bad form, but my fingers spread out along the fretboard, and i’m told that my fingers are supposed to be close together? If so, what I can I do to fix that?
And, is there anything I can do, aside from practicing, to improve my sweep picking? I tried the “start out slow, then work your way up” method, but that doesnt work too well. Also, does it matter what you started out learning? Like, if you begin guitar playing learning to play Alt. Rock, would it be harder to switch to Metal? . . . . . =/ I’m in a ruttttt. And I’ve been in it for yearrrs x(

I agree with the other answers, but the first thing that comes to mind is that you need some new input. The best place for that is to take lessons, so that you A) can’t continue to engage in certain bad habits, B) you’ll get some constructive criticism, C) you’ll have someone to give you technical tips and D) you can learn how to practice so that you can move forward.
