Well, as a guy that spent 32 years touring as a pro guitarist, I can tell you that speed isn’t everything. But I am fast as well. I would run scales and learn to be fast without any special effects first. Too many guys "think" that they are fast because they can run up and down the neck with the distortion on full. That actually covers a lot of mistakes. So learn to be fast with a "clean" sound first, learn where you are making mistakes and correct them. Then go for the distortion.

Make sure you learn to use that pinky finger on the neck. You will amazed how much more you can do using four fingers, instead of three, like many rockers do.

Run scales up and down the strings and up and down the neck first using the first and third fingers, then after you get comfy with that, do it again with the second and fourth fingers. Breaking in that fourth finger is tough, but once you get it, you won’t regret it.
