Yes..they should be strongly encouraged to do some "volunteer" work along those lines. There’s nothing wrong with being a volunteer.

No, if they are going to do that they should receive salary and health insurance.

This money is at least 80% directed toward children. And as a liberal, I believe that raising a child IS a job.

That would suck for most of the Bush conservatives currently on welfare, now wouldn’t it? :0)

Oooh! Look out! Hard work is coming your way guys!

      RUN AWAY! DON’T LOOK BACK!

if they were made to clean the roadways like litter patrols do, we would have the cleanest hwys. in the world. how about cutting wood for old people. i’ve donated my time at the food bank for some time and you see the same freeloaders every month, and the 3rd generation of the family. why should they work, when the gov’t will take care of them. (but at what price)

The lady who I read to twice a week receives money from the social services including food stamps.

She worked for 60 years with no pension ……please tell me which streets she should sweep so that you’ll feel better giving her benefits.

My mother had to get food stamps in the 70s when I was a small child in order to keep us healthy. People used to glare at us in the store and the cashiers were often rude and sometimes downright mean. I’ll never forget when one time a person said, "Geez lady, have enough kids?"

My mother used to cry in the car on the way home from the grocery store. She had 3 daughters and she stayed home to take care of us while our father worked 2 jobs and put himself through college. I don’t think that we should have been sweeping streets like people doing community service for DUIs. None of us has ever been on welfare. Two of us went to college and got Master’s degrees, the third is a stay at home mom.

My mom was Catholic and she believed the Pope. That doesn’t make her a common criminal.

Get off your high horse. Not all people on welfare are too lazy to work.

That’s actually a very GREAT idea! I don’t like the idea of people not having to work to earn a living while i bust my arse everyday. Everyone should contribute SOMETHING to society.

They should be at leat productive members of society. Instead we just allow them to become what they are. A portion of society that is taught that the government handing out money is the way it has always been and that they are entitled to it.

      I wouldn’t have a problem with that.

Oh geeze here we go again.
People on welfare are required to work, go to school, or job search 32 hours a week minimum. That means they are too busy to clean up your streets, or they may already be doing it. The only people on welfare that aren’t required to do it are those who are disabled, those with a baby uinder 6 months, those taking care of someone who is ill or handicap, etc, or others excused with a docs note.
