Speed Guitarists?
For the best part of my life I’ve listened to old school Metallica. My favourite album is …And Justice For All.
But from all my listenings and endless years of playing along on my two electric, my hand always burns in pain with the prolonged speed of the 64th, and 128th note precision of these crazy buggers. A little later in life I discovered Decapitated, Vader, Slayer, etc and found that these guys have similar a stamina for speed.
What I’d like to know is, how do you get that stamina? I’ve been playing for 16 years, read the techniques, practised the techniques, often three hours a day, developed my dexterity and finger-stretching skills quite well, spider-riffed, sweep-picked, fret-tapped, you name it. But I can’t keep up the pace when it comes to these insane diad/triad shifts. Ive seen Metallica do this live and I’m totally bewildered. The worst of all is Dyer’s Eve, I mean…how?
Just takes practice man. Plus some people are faster learners than others and catch on very quickly. I had the same problem in my early years of playing but after learning Satriani and Vai stuff note for note everything else just seems pretty easy as far as keeping up on the speed.
I would highly recommend practicing with a metronome and start at a speed where you feel comfortable and GRADUALLY increase the speed and after awhile you won’t even notice that you are getting faster.
It just takes time…try doing some towel pull-ups and other things that might work out your hands/forearms…
